<p>While you may have heard about the fad of planking, in this post we are not talking about that type of planking but to an effective ab exercise called the plank.</p>
<p>When you think of ab or core exercises you probably mainly think about crunches, sit ups or knee ups. However the is a very simple exercise called the plank which is more effective than all of those exercises and more combined.</p>
<p>Notice that I said that the exercise is simple, but didn&#8217;t say easy.  As it&#8217;s not easy to master.</p>
<p>You can start right now and within 10 or 15 seconds you can be on your way in doing your first try at it, but let me warn you that while you may be able to attempt to do the plank you won&#8217;t be able to perfect it until you have tried dozens upon dozens of times.</p>
<h3>What makes the plank so simple yet so difficult?</h3>
<p>As with most exercises, that are fairly easy to do, it takes practice to have correct form and posture. It&#8217;s the same thing with the plan exercise. As you will see by watching the video below, the plank looks extremely easy but once you try it you will find that it is not easy to keep your alignment straight and you may also have a hard time remembering to breathe normally.</p>
<p>When you get into the plank position and tighten your butt, legs, abs and upper body you will have a tendency to hold your breath in order to keep your body straight, as you will notice it does take a lot of effort to keep your belly from hanging low or pushing your butt up in the air.</p>
<p>Once you have perfected your alignment, you will begin to work on the amount of time that you can hold the position.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t laugh but unless your core muscles are already fairly strong you probably won&#8217;t be able to hold the position for more than 5 or 6 seconds. As you continue to do the plank exercise day after day ( a few times each day) the time that you will hold the exercise will get longer and when you can hold it about 3 minutes then more than likely you&#8217;ll be able to look in the mirror and see the best abs you have ever had.  That is  if you have also been watching what you eat and don&#8217;t have a layer of fat covering your mid-section.</p>
<p>Once you start doing the plank and seeing results you will never go back to doing crunches again.</p>
<p>The plank exercise is that good!<br />
So here is the video that will walk you through the plank exercise. Pay close attention as although it is simple you do need to learn the correct posture.</p>

<p>Developing strong and good looking abs is always a healthy goal. Getting a six pack abs is not merely for looks. Aside from looking muscular, men and women with six packs are stronger and faster. Aside from having flat stomachs and appearing sexy in any kind of dress, women with well developed abs have greater energy and endurance.</p>
<p>Some people realize the health benefits of strong abs early in their lives. Others find exercising attractive only when they reach middle age. But all enthusiasts of abs exercises begin at the same stage.</p>
<p>Beginners or newcomers to abs exercises need not immediately go to the strenuous positions followed by old timers.  This is not the fastest way to develop abs. The more advanced exercises can overstretch the body and cause injuries. Beginners must carry out abs exercises that are easier.</p>
<p>Also beginners, or those who have not worked out for a while should always check with their medical practitioner to make sure that they are healthy enough to exercise &#8211; this is extremely important.</p>
<p>Beginners must also warm up before doing the abs exercises. In this manner, the body will be gradually introduced into the whole abs program. Here are the three simplest abs exercises that the beginner can perform.</p>
<p><strong>The Upper Abs Crunch</strong></p>
<p>The upper abs crunch is the simplest of all abs exercises. The starting position is lying down with the back and feet hugging the floor and the knees are bent, making an angle of about 45 degrees. The arms are either crossed on the chest or laced behind the head. The exercise begins by crunching the abdomen and lifting the upper body, which includes the chest, the shoulders, and the head. But there should be no strain on the neck. The neck and head should simply follow the movement of the shoulders. The goal is not to sit upright. The goal is to make the abs exert effort in lifting the torso. Hold this position for at least two seconds and then slowly release to go back to the starting position. This exercise can be performed for at least 10 counts.</p>
<p><strong>The Lower Abs Crunch</strong></p>
<p>The lower abs crunch is the second simplest abs exercise. The starting position is still lying down on the floor with the knees bent. But only the back hugs the floor. The feet are lifted off the floor and the knees make a 90 degrees angle. The exercise begins by crunching the abdomen again. This time the lower part of the body, from pelvis to the feet, is lifted. The movement brings the knees closer to the chest. But the legs should not swing. Only the abs should make the effort. Hold this particular position for at least two seconds and then slowly go back to the starting position. The feet should remain off the floor. It is recommended that this exercise is done for at least 10 counts.</p>
<p><strong>The Side Abs Crunch</strong></p>
<p>And finally, the side abs crunch is the third simplest exercise. It may be simple but it targets the development of the side muscles of the abs, which are called “obliques”. The starting position is the same as the upper abs crunch but it is recommended that the hands are placed behind the head with the elbows pointing outwards. This exercise begins by lifting the upper torso and the followed by two simultaneous moves. One is moving the right elbow (without releasing the hand’s hold on the head) towards the left knee.</p>
<p>The other move is lifting the left knee so that it meets the elbow. The abs should be contracted once the elbow and knee are as near each other as possible. This position is held for two seconds and then the elbows and knees go back to the starting position. The exercise continues with the other side of the body. This time, the left elbow attempts to meet the right knee. The right and left cycle of crunching the abs is done for at least 10 cycles.</p>
<p>With these three simple abs exercises, the beginners can begin developing stronger abs.</p>

<p>For example, some exercisers claim that the crunch exercises performed at home are the most effective while others believe that going to a gym is crucial to getting really great abs.</p>
<p>There is actually nothing wrong with the hundreds of programs and tips about getting abs, except that these are incomplete. How to get abs involves a more comprehensive plan than getting a few minutes of exercise in one day. In fact, the overall strategy on how to get abs includes four different aspects.</p>
<p>The first aspect is all about building muscles. There would be no wash board “six pack” if a body does not have the muscles for it. Luckily, there are several specific exercises that can build muscles. Some of them are crunches, sit-ups, and push-ups.</p>
<p>But these exercises has to be done right in order to build muscles and get abs. In performing crunches, the hands should be placed on the sides and not behind the head. At the same time, only half of the spine should be lifted off the floor. The lower half stays down.</p>
<p>In performing sit-ups, the hands can be crossed across the chest and the whole upper body should be lifted. The sit-up can evolve into a jackknife if the knees and upper body are raised into the air.</p>
<p>In performing push-ups, the back should kept straight, like a rigid inclined plane. The effort should be given by the abdominal muscles and the arms. In all exercises, regular breathing should be maintained.</p>

<p>There will be a stage when the usual supply of energy runs out and the body will harness the stored fat to create more energy. This is when fats are being burned.</p>
<p>Some of the exercises that can help lose fats are weight lifting and cardio exercises. In performing weight lifting, the large muscles should become the target. These large muscles, such as the chest, the back, the thighs, and the hamstring, should exert the greatest effort.</p>
<p>In performing cardio exercises, the best time is the morning before breakfast. Without food in the stomach, the fat reserves will be immediately used by the body. It is also recommended that cardio exercises should be carried out for 30 minutes or more.</p>
<p>The third aspect is about eating right. When a person eats right, he keeps his metabolism at a steady rate. This means that the meals should be smaller but more frequent. If, after eating a meal, the body still feels the pangs of hunger, the solution is a glass of water.</p>
<p>The body is actually not hungry. It is just thirsty. Drinking lots of water will do the trick and this will prevent the body from ingesting more calories.</p>
<p>And the fourth aspect is about staying safe. For some people, a consultation with the doctor is the first step before starting any exercise program.
